Venue: Jubilee Hills Public School, Hyderabad
Date: 3 January 2026
A Night Sky Observation Session was successfully conducted at JHPS, Hyderabad, with the objective of introducing students to practical astronomy and enhancing their understanding of celestial objects through direct observation.
During the session, students observed Jupiter along with its four Galilean moons, Saturn with its prominent rings and its largest moon Titan, and the Full Moon using astronomical telescopes. The clear sky conditions allowed for excellent visibility, making the observations both engaging and educational.
The event was made even more special by the occurrence of several notable celestial phenomena. On the same night, a conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter was observed, presenting a striking visual alignment in the sky. Additionally, the Earth was at perihelion (its closest point to the Sun) while the Moon was at perigee (its closest point to the Earth). This rare cosmic coincidence caused the Moon to appear significantly larger and brighter, captivating the students.
Students actively participated in the session, asked insightful questions, and showed great enthusiasm while observing the night sky. The hands-on experience helped them better understand astronomical concepts such as planetary motion, moons, conjunctions, and lunar phases.
Overall, the Night Sky Observation Session was a highly successful and enriching experience, fostering curiosity and interest in astronomy among the students.
