VOICE THREAD PACKAGING STUDY PROJECT
A partnership between Jubilee Hills Public School, HYD. And
Exploris Middle School, Releigh, North Carolina- USA

JUBILEE HILLS PUBLIC SCHOOL pursued a partnership with the EXPLORIS MIDDLE ,Releigh, North Carolina- USA for a Kenan Fellows Educational Project sponsored by Mead Westvaco surrounding packaging.

The main objective of this initiative was to share ideas between students from these two countries and encourage them to develop and enrich their technical skills. It also helped the students in gaining insights into cross cultural aspects. The proposal was to have a communication channel through E mail and web conferencing. With 17 students from classes 7 and 8 and four teachers , the project kicked off on 29 Oct.,2008 and ended on 26 March 2009.

During the 11 sessions, the students geared up to complete the 8 tasks of packaging as Project I. The students were given a product made up of different packaging material. They were asked to present about the different aspects of this packaging material which focused on the product’s image, convenience, protection, construction, and sustainability. To share information about this study with the EMS students, our students had to register themselves through a website called “Voicethread” which is accessible at www.voicethread.com.

The second project was on Design Challenge. Students were to design a unique package that can safely hold a hardboiled egg with up to 50 pounds of pressure applied. The students were divided into four teams and each team constructed a model for egg packaging.

The final web conferencing session was held on 26 March 2009. The students discussed the similarities and differences of packaging, ask questions about EMS Voice Thread projects, shared packaging design results and gave a feedback to each other.

As a token of appreciation, the students were given ‘Awards of Excellence’ by the School. It was indeed an icebreaker to all the members of this venture. The teachers and the students had hands on experience by exchanging ideas with the EMS students of North Carolina, USA.
